Using prefabricated blocks, the concept allows the creation of flexible spaces responding to various needs of a refuggee camp, such as social housing, infirmaries, common utility spaces, schools, and many others.
Designed to optimize processes from manufacture to transport and final assembly, aiming to reduce the overall cost and to improve funcionality and comfort. The system allows on site assembly using reduced and non specialized human resources and machinary, enabling a simple and fast building implementation.
More than a simple temporary shelter, the Modwel System is a construction solution that will help to improve the overall refugee life conditions and social integration. The simplicity of the concept allows, not only to build simple infrasestructures for short term stay and camp logistics, but also, on a second level, to be installed in local neighbourhoods responding to the need for social housing in the integration process.

By studying the simplicity and geniality behind the most famous construction concept ever - Lego - our team came up with a solution as simple and versatile as the favorite bulding toy of kids and grownups all over the world.
A modular system made with standard prefabricated blocks, designed for maximum efficiency and manufactured allowing mass production at a very low cost.
As with Lego, it's possible to have as many different types of blocks as needed, according to the need for a refugee shelter or other more complex structures. Due to the reduced volume and the simple logistics involved the Modwell System’s transportation cost is also drastically reduced if compared with current long term shelter solutions like containers.
With the Modwel System concept, it will be possible to assemble house units or any other type of infrastructure directly at the construction site, by non specialized human resources and without any complex machinery.
The system was created to be intuitive and simple to handle through a small number of specific steps. This way, the modules can even be built by the refugee community itself, easily guided by one tutor or even by a step by step scheme.
The modularity on which the Modwell System concept is based on, results in a high level of flexibility to build different infrastructure typologies. From small and very simple refugee housing units to a wide range of other types os spaces, where ONG’s can manage logistics, create infirmaries or implement community spaces.
The Modwell System is a solution that also intervenes at an urbanistic level, inside and outside the refugee camp.
Refugee camps tend to be vast and crowded areas, where circulation is not easy and intuitive. With this solution, camps can be segmented using different block colors for long and short term residential, logistic and communitarian areas. This way we can improve refugee camp organization and turn them into a more pleasurable and organized place to live.
The concept can also respond to the lack of social housing for those who the asylum was granted and are struggling with integration in a new comunity. By combining the solution with more definitive structures, a social residential block can be built in local neighborhoods, in a fully integrated approach with higher standards of confort for a longer stay.
